Leeds United are said to be interested in re-signing Bayern Munich U19 winger Rene Maric, Jesse Marsch’s former assistant, but the Bavarian giants are trying to agree a new deal for him.

The Whites are potentially two games away from promotion back to the Premier League this season with a play-off semi-final second leg on Thursday and a possible trip to Wembley under Daniel Farke.

Farke coached Leeds to a 90-point season but saw the club miss out on automatic promotion by six points.

Leeds reckon Rene Maric is on his way back after leaving in 2023

A report from German publication Tageszeitung claims that Bayern Munich U19 coach Rene Maric is on Leeds’ radar this summer.

Maric, 31, was assistant to Jesse Marsch in the 22/23 season before the American and his backroom team were sacked in February 2023.

Since then, Maric has impressed while working in the Bavarian giants’ youth set-up, to the point where he is also on Sunderland’s radar with their vacant position in the dugout after sacking Mick Beale.

Who will win the playoffs?

Bayern Munich are planning to retain Maric with a new contract

A setback for the 49ers and Sunderland in their alleged interest in Maric comes in the fact that, with the young manager’s contract set to expire, he is open to talks with Bayern.

The report suggests Bayern are keen to extend Maric’s stay at the club beyond the summer as they continue their currently fruitless search for a first-team coach to replace Thomas Tuchel.

Rush to consider Farke’s replacements at this stage

As much as Leeds should be promoted with the quality of the current squad and there are legitimate criticisms of Farke’s set-up, he certainly deserves more time.

The 49ers apparently aren’t considering firing Farke at all, so the interest in Maric doesn’t really relate to the overall health of the club.

He’s definitely someone to keep a close eye on in the future, though, as he’s now highly rated at several clubs.
